Donation brands immersive simulation experience into nursing education

�鶹ֱ��’s dedication to providing quality education and fostering innovation resonates deeply with the values upheld by the Brand Family Foundation. These shared values have led to a significant donation by the foundation that will change the way nursing students learn and prepare for their future careers.

“Our commitment of $250,000 will contribute to the advancement of �鶹ֱ��’s initiatives, particularly those aimed at enhancing student experiences, promoting academic excellence, fostering a culture of inclusivity and diversity, and, more explicitly, fostering the development of health-care workers,” says Lexi Brand, a director of the Foundation. “We recognize the college’s pivotal role in shaping the future of health care by empowering students and driving positive change in our communities.”

The immersive simulation space that the Brand family gave to is designed to be an interdisciplinary hub for cutting-edge simulation learning and the family was immediately impressed by the range of programs it would support and how it would enable students to gain practical experience in a safe, life-like setting.

Named the Brand Family 360 Interdisciplinary Simulation Space, in honour of the Foundation’s gift to �鶹ֱ��, the interdisciplinary simulation space inside the Dr. MaryLynn West Moynes Nursing and Wellness Wing at the Barrie Campus is unique to Ontario colleges and universities, as it’s fully interactive and multisensory.

Engaging through sight, sound, smell, and touch, in addition to providing unique collaboration across program areas, the Brand Family 360 space represents innovation in health-care education.

“This type of simulation lab offers a unique and engaging virtual interactive learning environment without the use of a headset. Learners fully engage in, and respond through interactive walls and floors, in addition to different sounds, smells and scenes allowing them to truly feel that they are in a virtual environment,” says Treva Job, Manager, Simulation Centre.

“Through the power of innovation and an open mind, our educators can design, implement, and deliver any educational content for any program area. This transformative simulated learning environment is another way that �鶹ֱ�� is committing to excellence, and an unrivaled student experience that develops the skills and confidence needed to respond effectively and prepare them for real-world challenges.”

All surfaces respond to touch, and the sounds, smells, and props in the simulation provide a powerful learning experience. The room is equipped with 360-degree cameras to enable the customization of virtual reality spaces, thereby placing participants in their exact working environment so when they start a placement or new role at a hospital, they’re completely prepared.

Health-care workers are vital. This contribution will enable �鶹ֱ�� to continue its outstanding work and further its impact on the education sector and local community. We are confident that �鶹ֱ�� will effectively utilize these funds to support its programs and facilities, benefiting students and the broader community.
